Andrew Smith Gallery hosts a book signing for photographer, producer and screenplay writer, BILL WITTLIFF, who will be signing copies of his new book, A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove, on Saturday, November 10, 2007 from 1 to 4 p.m. Based in Austin, Texas, Bill Wittliff has had a distinguished career as a photographer, film producer, director, publisher, and screenwriter of such films as The Black Stallion, Raggedy Man, Barbarosa, Country, Legends of the Fall and The Perfect Storm. He is perhaps best known for screenwriting the Emmy award-winning television mini-series Lonesome Dove, and for creating the only photographic chronicle of the production. Published in 2007 by University of Texas Press: Austin, A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove contains more than one hundred of Wittliff's great photographs "reminiscent of the nineteenth-century cowboy photographs of Erwin Smith and the western paintings of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. For everyone who loves the novel and the movie, A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove provides yet another powerful way of experiencing this mythical, yet wholly real world." A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove is available as a limited edition of 250. Of these, 200 are numbered copies that include 2 original photogravures signed by Bill Wittliff. Regular hardbacks signed by Wittliff are priced $45.00. In the late 1980s Wittliff was signed to write the teleplay for Lonesome Dove and serve as its Executive Producer. He photographed the cast as filming began in March 1988 in Austin, Texas, making memorable photographs of Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Robert Urich, Danny Glover, Anjelica Huston, and Diane Lane in their various roles. During the 88 days of filming he photographed the cast as they filmed in Del Rio, Texas in April, and Santa Fe, New Mexico in May. One of Wittliff's photographs from the series titled Gus on the Porch remains the best selling single original photograph of the last decade. Aired on CBS in February 1989, Lonesome Dove's high ratings and critical acclaim quickly made it a timeless classic among fans of the American West. According to Wittliff, "The ongoing affection for both Larry's book and the mini-series that came from it is just phenomenal. Robert Duvall told me he couldn't go anyplace in the world where he didn't step out of a car or a hotel and some guy walking down the other side of the street would yell, 'Hey, Gus!' In Russia, in New Zealand, in Argentina." Liz Kay |
