"Jose Luis was born on the dirt floor of his parents' one-room hut. Leonardia was terrified when she first noticed her baby's facial deformity. Many Quechua believe that a child's deformities are somehow related to the sins of the mother. Five weeks later, hearing that a medical team that could help was coming to Cuzco, Leonardia and her husband immediately began the fifty mile trek. Six days after this photograph was taken, their baby's lip was repaired."
